information from the Birmingham Museum of Art catalog

description: This painting is typical of the work Chapman produced during his nearly three and half decades in Italy. Here, a woman in traditional Italian peasant costume kneels before a wayside shrine to the Virgin Mary in the Campagna outside Rome. The ruins of the Claudian Aqueduct are visible in the lower left corner of the composition, while the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica can be seen in the distant skyline.
