description:
The Dutch painter Gerrit Berckheyde is known for his crisp depictions of architectural monuments and urban spaces. Unusual for the artist, this work displays careful attention to human figures and their activities in presenting an idealized vision of urban life. While one woman leans over a laundry basket, another beats a garment; a third pulls water out of a well. The central figure walks with a herd of goats, perhaps returning from the market; another carries a baby atop a wagon.
