description:
Caneletto was known for his city views of Venice, called veduta, which English tourists particularly admired as souvenirs. Depicted here is the intersection of the canal of Cannaregio, which continues into the background, with the Grand Canal in the foreground. Caneletto has altered various elements of the landscape for compositional purposes; the bell tower is taller and more slender than in reality, the bridge is brought closer to the foreground, and the building to the right, the Palazzo Querini, is given a more angled and taller facade.
